Overview

About this journey

This exciting 2-day gorilla trekking safari offers travelers a unique opportunity to experience one of Africa’s greatest wildlife adventures — mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while starting and ending the journey in Kigali, Rwanda.

Highlights

What you'll experience

  • Bwindi's Rushegura group ranges the Buhoma sector. When the vegetation parts and a juvenile swings overhead, your guide Enock says nothing — he just points slowly upward.

  • The road south from Kigali climbs through terraced hillsides of sorghum and banana. Crossing at Cyanika into Uganda marks the shift from tarmac certainty to red laterite and forest smell.

  • From the veranda of Kigezi Highland Camp, the sun drops behind the Virunga peaks on the Rwanda side. A troop of olive baboons moves across the slope below in single file.

Why choose us

Why choose a Private Journey?

This crossing works because we've driven it dozens of times and know where it slows down, which permit allocation gives you the best forest depth, and how to build the timing so the trek doesn't feel rushed.

Permits Secured in Advance

Gorilla permits for Bwindi are limited and in high demand. We hold confirmed permits before you confirm your booking — no vague availability, no waitlist anxiety.

Guides Who Know the Forest

Our lead guide on this route, Enock Mudde, has been walking Buhoma for eleven years. He knows the Rushegura group by sight and narrates the hour with them like a naturalist, not a tour operator.

Cross-Border Logistics Handled

Two national parks, one international border, and a long driving day are a lot to coordinate. We manage the paperwork, the timing, and the contingencies so you can look out the window.

Day 2Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest & Return to Kigali

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides.During the briefing, you will learn the gorilla trekking guidelines, safety measures, and expectations while visiting the gorillas in their natural habitat. You will then be assigned a gorilla family together with experienced ranger guides and trackers before entering the rainforest. The gorilla trekking experience can take between 2 and 7 hours depending on the movement and location of the gorilla family. The trek may involve hiking through steep slopes, dense vegetation, and forest trails, making it both challenging and rewarding. As you move through Bwindi’s ancient rainforest, you may encounter: Forest birds, Butterflies, Monkeys, Unique tree species, Small forest mammals

The highlight of the experience comes when you finally meet the mountain gorillas. Visitors are allowed one unforgettable hour with the gorillas while observing their natural behaviors. You may watch mothers caring for young gorillas, playful juveniles climbing branches, or the powerful silverback monitoring the family group. This close wildlife encounter remains one of Africa’s most extraordinary safari experiences. After trekking, return to the park headquarters where you will receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Depending on time availability, an optional community cultural visit may be arranged where you can experience traditional dances, music performances, and local cultural experiences from surrounding communities.

Later, begin your drive back to Kigali with arrival expected in the evening. Drop-off will be at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

Queen Elizabeth National Park — Tree-Climbing Lions

Extend south into Queen Elizabeth National Park for two days of game drives across the Kasenyi plains and a boat trip up the Kazinga Channel. The park's fig trees in Ishasha hold lions that genuinely climb and rest in branches — a behaviour rare enough that guides still stop and stare.

A Second Gorilla Permit — Mgahinga or Bwindi Rushegura

A second permit on a consecutive morning is the only reliable way to slow the hour down. Guests who've done it say the first trek teaches you what to watch for; the second lets you actually watch.
