Highlights

What you'll experience

  • Rwanda's gorilla families range across altitudes between 2,500 m and 4,000 m. Trackers radio ahead each morning so your group walks straight to the family β€” sometimes 45 minutes through bamboo, sometimes three hours up volcanic slopes. The one-hour sit with the gorillas is the same regardless.

  • The 7:30 am briefing at Kinigi park headquarters is more than a safety talk. Rangers explain each habituated family's personality, recent movements, and what to watch for β€” knowledge that sharpens everything you see once you are in the forest.

  • The two-and-a-half-hour road from Kigali passes through tea estates, red-soil market towns, and finally the broad collar of farmland that presses right up against the park boundary β€” a quiet lesson in why gorilla conservation is inseparable from the lives of the people living alongside it.

  • Local community porters carry your day pack, steady you on steep sections, and share a cut of their fee directly with households bordering the park. Hiring one costs a few dollars and makes a measurable difference.

Why choose us

Why choose a Private Journey?

A single day is tight. Here is how we make it work β€” and why guests who booked as a stopover often extend their stay.

The Right Gorilla Family for You

Rangers match trekking groups to families based on fitness and preference declared at the morning briefing. You are never sent on a four-hour climb if your body isn't ready for it.

Private Vehicle, No Shared Transfers

Your driver travels with you door to door β€” hotel to trailhead to airport. Departure and return times flex around your flight schedule, not a shared minibus timetable.

We've Run This Day Hundreds of Times

Our lead guide Sylvia Kabarungi has accompanied guests on this route since 2018. She knows when to push for the early departure and when the afternoon light is worth a slower return.

Itinerary

your day-by-day journey

Day 1Early Morning Departure from Kigali

You will embark on a scenic 2–3 hour drive through Rwanda's beautiful countryside, often referred to as the "Land of a Thousand Hills." Recommended: For a more relaxed experience, travelers are encouraged to spend the previous night in Musanze (Ruhengeri), which is much closer to the park headquarters.

During the briefing, you will learn:

βœ… Gorilla trekking rules and guidelines

βœ… Safety procedures in the forest

Trekking duration may vary from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location and movement of the gorillas. Day 2Optional: Musanze Town & Caves

For guests who choose to base themselves in Musanze the night before the trek, this optional day allows a late-morning visit to the Musanze Caves β€” a series of lava tubes beneath the town, formed when the Virungas were more active. Local guides lead you through chambers large enough to shelter entire communities during Rwanda's troubled decades; the history is carried lightly but honestly.

The afternoon is free for the weekly craft market near the town centre, where weavers sell agaseke baskets in the late-afternoon light. Dinner back at your guesthouse, then an early night before a 4:30 am wake-up call.

Day 3Optional Extension: Golden Monkey Tracking

If your schedule allows a second morning in the park, golden monkey tracking is one of the best-value wildlife encounters in East Africa. These vivid primates β€” cobalt-blue face, rust-gold flanks β€” live in the bamboo zone below gorilla habitat and are habitually far more acrobatic and entertaining than their solemnity-inducing cousins.

You depart Kinigi at the same hour as gorilla trekkers, split to a different trailhead, and typically find the group within 30–45 minutes. Another hour with the monkeys, then a late lunch in Musanze before the drive south to Kigali.
