About this journey

Safari Overview

Experience the ultimate primate and adventure safari in southwestern Uganda with this exciting 7-day journey to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Nestled within the breathtaking Virunga Mountains, Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park but offers some of the country's most extraordinary wildlife and hiking experiences. This unforgettable safari combines mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, immersive Batwa cultural encounters, and thrilling volcano hikes. Explore dense bamboo forests, climb extinct volcanic peaks, and enjoy panoramic views stretching across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, photographer, or adventure seeker, this safari promises unique encounters with endangered species and remarkable landscapes in the heart of the Virunga Conservation Area.

Highlights

What you'll experience

  • Your permit grants one hour with a habituated gorilla family in the forest below Muhavura. A silverback at rest ten metres away, turning a fig stem in his knuckles, is a moment that rearranges your sense of scale.

  • The Virunga bamboo zone is the only place on earth where Cercopithecus kandti — the golden monkey — leaps in fractured morning sunlight through yellow stems. Tracking them through Mgahinga's lower slopes takes two to four hours and feels like following confetti.

  • At 3,669 m, Sabyinyo's eroded cone offers the park's most technical ridge scramble. The final section uses fixed ropes. From the top you look down into three countries simultaneously — one of the few places on earth where you can do so.

  • A lava-tube cave beneath Mgahinga's floor, Garama was used as a hideout by the Batwa for centuries. A ranger-led descent by headlamp reveals stalactites and the still-cool air of the mountain's interior.

  • The highland district around Kisoro is pocked with small, deep crater lakes — Mutanda, Chahafi, Mulehe. A late-afternoon walk along the ridge between Mulehe and Chahafi, with papyrus rafts and african fish eagles overhead, is the expedition's quietest reward.

  • Gahinga (3,474 m) is the smallest of the three Ugandan Virungas, and its summit holds a swamp crater ringed with giant lobelia. The five-hour return hike through bamboo and then afro-alpine moorland is demanding but never technical.

Why choose us

Why choose a Small Group Journey?

Mgahinga is the smallest and least-visited of Uganda's great primate parks. That is exactly why we bring you here.

Two Primate Species, One Park

No other park in East Africa gives you a realistic chance of tracking both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the same week, in the same landscape. The Nyakagezi family and the bamboo-zone golden monkey troop are both well-habituated and consistently located by our tracker team.

Small Group, Real Access

We cap this expedition at eight guests. That means one gorilla permit group, one set of tracks up Sabyinyo, and a guide-to-guest ratio that allows for real conversation — about conservation, about Batwa history, about what you are actually seeing in the forest.

Guides Who Know This Mountain

Isaac Mwanguhya has been guiding in the Virungas for over a decade. He knows where the golden monkeys sleep, which section of Sabyinyo's ridge is slippery after rain, and which Batwa elders are most candid about the park's complicated history. That knowledge is not something you find on a larger tour.
