🐵 Chimpanzee Trekking Experience
Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest takes place in the Kaniyo Pabidi section of the reserve, where several chimpanzee communities have been habituated for tourism and research.
Chimpanzees share approximately 98% of human DNA, making them one of humanity’s closest relatives. Watching them interact in the wild is a fascinating and unforgettable experience.
The trekking experience begins with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides before visitors enter the forest in search of the chimpanzees.
Trekking usually starts at around 7:00 AM and can last between 30 minutes and several hours depending on the movement and location of the chimpanzees.
During the trek, visitors may observe chimpanzees:
Feeding, Climbing trees,,Grooming, Playing, Communicating with loud calls
The forest walk itself is equally rewarding as visitors also encounter beautiful vegetation, giant mahogany trees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife species along the trails.
📅 Detailed Safari Itinerary
Early Morning Departure from Kampala
Your safari guide will pick you up very early in the morning from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe before beginning the drive northwards toward Budongo Forest Reserve.
The journey takes you through beautiful countryside landscapes, local villages, farms, and towns including Masindi, which is the nearest major town to the reserve.

Upon arrival at Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest, you will receive a briefing from the ranger guides before beginning the chimpanzee trekking experience.
Accompanied by experienced forest guides, you will hike through the tropical rainforest searching for the chimpanzees while also learning about the forest ecosystem.
Besides chimpanzees, visitors may also spot:
Monkeys, Forest birds, Butterflies, Reptiles, Medicinal plants, Ancient mahogany trees
The trekking experience offers excellent opportunities for photography, bird watching, and nature appreciation.
After spending time with the chimpanzees, return from the forest and enjoy lunch at a nearby lodge or restaurant before beginning the drive back to Kampala.
Arrival in Kampala is usually in the late afternoon or evening depending on traffic and trekking duration.

Only 6 visitors are allowed per chimpanzee trekking group. Children below 12 years are generally not allowed to trek chimpanzees, Visitors are advised to carry:, Hiking shoes, Long trousers, Drinking water, Insect repellent, Rain jacket, Camera.
Because chimpanzees move freely in the forest, trekking duration can vary each day.
