Highlights

What you'll experience

  • A permitted hour inside a habituated gorilla group — close enough to watch a silverback settle, a juvenile reach for bamboo, a mother nurse her infant in dappled morning light.

  • Rwanda's golden monkeys move fast and bright through the bamboo. Catching them mid-leap — cheeks flushed orange, tails arcing — demands quick eyes and a good tracker. Ours are both.

  • The town that serves as gateway to the volcanoes rewards an afternoon walk. The Friday market brings farmers down from the slopes with dried beans, passion fruit, and hand-carved wooden gourds.

  • Lakes Burera and Ruhondo sit below the Virungas in a deep green bowl. The viewpoint above them at last light, with bats beginning to flicker over the water, is worth every minute of the drive.

  • Rwanda Development Board rangers run a thorough morning briefing before both treks — gorilla behavior, distance rules, forest etiquette. It turns a permit into a proper encounter.

Why choose us

Why choose a Private Journey?

Rwanda's gorilla and golden monkey permits are among the most tightly managed wildlife encounters on the continent — the forest protects its residents, and these encounters feel earned. Here's why this particular four days works.

Both Primates, One Trip

Most Rwanda visits focus on gorillas alone. By adding a golden monkey trek on day three, you leave with two genuinely distinct primate encounters — slow and still versus fast and aerial — and a richer sense of what the Virunga bamboo forest holds.

Private Guiding Throughout

Your guide travels with you from Kigali pickup to final airport transfer. That continuity matters: briefings are tailored to what you saw the day before, pace adjusts to your fitness, and no time is spent waiting for others to catch up.

Permit Logistics Handled

Gorilla and golden monkey permits require advance booking, and demand for certain families and dates is high. We secure permits as soon as your trip is confirmed and manage any RDB coordination — you arrive knowing exactly which group you'll visit.

Day 3Gorilla Trekking – Gorilla Guardians Village Cultural Experience

After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing by park rangers. You will receive important information about gorilla trekking rules, safety guidelines, and conservation efforts before beginning your adventure. Enter the forest with experienced guides and trackers as you search for one of the habituated mountain gorilla families living within the Virunga Mountains. The trek may take several hours depending on the location of the gorillas, but the reward of standing in the presence of these gentle giants is truly unforgettable.

Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend one magical hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch them feed, play, groom each other, and interact within their family groups while capturing memorable photographs. After this incredible encounter, return to your lodge for relaxation. Day 4Golden Monkey Tracking – Transfer to Kigali – Departure

After breakfast, prepare for another exciting primate adventure in Volcanoes National Park as you set out for golden monkey tracking. Golden monkeys are among Rwanda's most fascinating wildlife species. These rare and playful primates are known for their beautiful golden-orange fur and energetic behavior as they jump between bamboo trees and move through the forest.

Your guide and park trackers will lead you through the forest in search of these unique creatures. Since wildlife movements cannot always be predicted, the duration of the trek may vary. Carrying drinking water and a packed lunch is recommended. During your encounter, you will have the opportunity to observe the golden monkeys as they feed, play, and interact in their natural environment. This experience also contributes to conservation efforts aimed at protecting these endangered primates.

After completing the golden monkey trek, begin your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. Your unforgettable 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Golden Monkey Safari comes to an end, leaving you with incredible memories of Rwanda's wildlife, culture, and natural beauty.
