8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Lemosho Route

View Itinerary

Overview

About this journey

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and successful routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Beginning on the mountain's remote western side, this route offers spectacular scenery, excellent acclimatization, and a high summit success rate. Trekkers pass through diverse ecosystems ranging from lush rainforest and heathland to alpine desert before reaching the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Highlights

What you'll experience

  • You enter the mountain through the Lemosho Glades on its remote western side, where buffalo trails cross the path and the canopy closes above you before the moorland opens out. Almost no other trekkers start here.

  • Camp on the ancient caldera of the Shira Plateau with the peak floating above and, on clear evenings, the shadow of the volcano stretching west across Tanzania until it blurs into the plains.

  • Climbing high to Lava Tower at 4,642 m before dropping back to sleep lower — the standard acclimatisation trick — pays dividends on summit night. A volcanic plug the size of a town block marks the spot.

  • Hands on rock, feet finding ledges — the Barranco Wall is one of Kilimanjaro's great surprises. It looks impossible from below. Forty minutes later you are over it, grinning.

  • Tucked beneath the Southern Icefields, Karanga Camp sits in a valley that channels morning light straight at the glaciers. White ice against blue sky, breakfast steaming in your hands.

  • Midnight departure, headlamps bobbing up the switchbacks of Stella Point, then the crater rim and the final ridge walk to Uhuru at 5,895 m. The sun comes up over a sea of cloud that stretches to Kenya.

  • The descent via Mweka Camp drops you through all the life zones in a single day — alpine desert, moorland, then the same moss-draped trees you started in, now smelling like arrival rather than anticipation.

Why choose us

Why choose a Small Group Journey?

The Lemosho Route succeeds where shorter routes falter because it gives the mountain the time it deserves. Here is why we run it this way.

Eight Days, Proper Acclimatisation

The extra days are not filler — they are medicine. The Lava Tower high-low day and the gradual profile of the Lemosho approach give your body a genuine chance to adapt. Our summit success rate on this itinerary is consistently higher than the industry average for six-day routes.

Guides Who Know Every Metre

Lead guide Enock Mudde has summited Kilimanjaro over 60 times via multiple routes. He reads how each guest is moving and adjusts pace without being asked. The team-to-guest ratio on our departures is never below 1:2.

Small Group, Western Flank Solitude

A maximum of eight guests keeps the group moveable and the experience quiet. The Lemosho western approach sees a fraction of the traffic of the Marangu or Machame routes — in two days of forest walking you may meet no other trekkers at all.

Elevation: 2,200 m to 2,780 m

Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Before your climb, you will attend a comprehensive briefing with our experienced mountain guides, who will review the itinerary, check your equipment, and answer any questions.

After breakfast, drive approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate, the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Complete the park registration and permit formalities before beginning your trek through the lush rainforest toward Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp).
