5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route

View Itinerary

Overview

About this journey

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the oldest and one of the most popular routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the other routes, it offers comfortable overnight stays in mountain huts instead of tents, making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a more comfortable climbing experience.

This five-day adventure takes you through lush rainforest, scenic heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.

Highlights

What you'll experience

  • The first hours of climbing pass through dense montane forest where black-and-white colobus monkeys crash through fig trees overhead and the air smells of wet moss. By mid-morning you are above the canopy and the plains of Kilimanjaro National Park stretch south.

  • Above 3,000 metres the vegetation thins to heath and then open moorland studded with giant Senecio and lobelia — alien-looking plants that exist only at this altitude on East African volcanoes. Your guide, Emmanuel Mushi, calls it the moon with roots.

  • The summit push begins at midnight from Kibo Hut. Three hours of scree and volcanic ash in the beam of your headtorch, and then the crater rim at Gilman's Point (5,681 m) opens with the full arch of the Milky Way behind you and the first coral light spreading over Kenya.

  • From Gilman's Point the final ridge walk to Uhuru Peak follows the inner crater wall past the remains of the Eastern Icefields. The air holds only about half the oxygen you are used to; each step is deliberate, and the silence up here is absolute.

  • Kilimanjaro's glaciers are retreating — standing beside the Rebmann or Furtwängler ice wall is to witness something that may not survive another generation. The blue-white ice towers above head height and creaks in the early cold.

  • Horombo is the social heart of the Marangu Route: a cluster of A-frame huts where climbers from different nations share dining tables, compare blister remedies, and watch the shadow of the summit cone slide across the Saddle as the sun drops.

Why choose us

Why choose a Small Group Journey?

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's most storied path — not the easiest, but the one with the greatest continuity of shelter, support, and human presence on the mountain. Here is why we believe it is the right way to approach Africa's highest summit.

Experienced Mountain Guides

Emmanuel Mushi and our lead climbing team hold KINAPA certification and between them have guided more than 400 successful ascents. They read altitude sickness early, set a realistic pace, and never rush a descent.

Small Groups, Real Attention

A maximum of eight climbers means your guide knows your breathing pattern by day two. There is no pressure to keep pace with a crowd; the mountain is encountered at your speed.

End-to-End Logistics

From Moshi airport transfers to park fees, porter wages, meals on the mountain, and your post-climb certificate — everything is arranged before you arrive. You carry only your day pack.

Itinerary

your day-by-day journey

Day 1Marangu Gate (1,830 m) – Mandara Hut (2,740 m)

Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast in Moshi, drive approximately one hour to Marangu Gate, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, complete the park registration and permit formalities before meeting your mountain crew.

Begin your trek through the lush rainforest, where towering trees, colorful birds, and playful monkeys create a magical introduction to the mountain. Your guide will explain the unique flora, fauna, and ecosystem found within this tropical forest.

The trail can be muddy and slippery, particularly during the rainy season, so trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended. Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and spend your first night on the mountain.

Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Habitat: Heath and Moorland

After breakfast, continue your ascent as the dense rainforest gradually gives way to heath and moorland vegetation. The landscape changes dramatically, revealing giant lobelias, giant groundsels, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Stop for lunch along the trail while enjoying spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's second-highest summit.

Arrive at Horombo Hut in the late afternoon, where you can relax while enjoying magnificent views of both Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Temperatures become noticeably cooler at this altitude.

Following breakfast, continue your journey across the vast alpine desert known as The Saddle, a barren plateau that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The vegetation becomes sparse as you trek through this dramatic volcanic landscape. After stopping for lunch, continue to Kibo Hut, the final base camp before your summit attempt.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing your equipment for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak. An early dinner is served before you retire for a few hours of sleep.

The climb is physically and mentally demanding, with loose volcanic scree and cold temperatures challenging every step. As dawn approaches, witness one of Africa's most spectacular sunrises illuminating the glaciers and volcanic landscapes.

Continue for approximately one more hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the roof of Africa. Celebrate your incredible achievement with photographs while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views before beginning your descent.
