About Virunga National Park

Rwanda

Virunga National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically diverse national parks, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), along the borders of Uganda and Rwanda. Established in 1925, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its remarkable landscapes, rich wildlife, and endangered mountain gorillas.

The park features a spectacular variety of habitats, including tropical rainforests, savannah grasslands, wetlands, volcanic mountains, and the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. It is home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, hippos, buffaloes, and numerous bird species. The park is also famous for the Nyiragongo volcanic region, known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes.

Virunga offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure travellers. Mountain gorilla trekking is one of its most notable attractions, providing visitors with a chance to observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat. However, tourism activities and access to certain areas may be restricted due to security conditions, so visitors should check current travel advisories and official park updates before planning a visit.

As a vital conservation area, Virunga National Park plays an important role in protecting endangered wildlife, preserving unique ecosystems, and supporting local communities through conservation initiatives.
