About Semuliki National Park

Country
Uganda

Semuliki National Park is a remarkable wilderness destination located in western Uganda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Situated within the Albertine Rift Valley, near the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, the park covers approximately 220 square kilometres and protects one of Africa's most distinctive lowland tropical rainforests.

The park is an extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin, giving it a unique Central African atmosphere. Its dense forests, winding rivers, swampy clearings and diverse vegetation provide habitats for an impressive variety of wildlife, including forest elephants, buffaloes, several primate species and numerous small mammals.

Semuliki is particularly famous for its exceptional birdlife, with more than 440 recorded bird species, including several Central African forest species rarely encountered elsewhere in East Africa. This makes it an excellent destination for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts and photographers. Visitors can also explore the famous Sempaya Hot Springs, one of the park's main attractions, where geothermal waters bubble up from the earth. The male and female springs are surrounded by lush vegetation and are associated with local cultural traditions.

Nature walks through the forest offer opportunities to discover colourful butterflies, unique plant species, primates and the sounds of tropical wildlife. Visitors may also learn about the traditions and cultural heritage of communities living around the park, including the Batwa people.

With its rich biodiversity, fascinating geothermal features and authentic wilderness atmosphere, Semuliki National Park offers a different experience from Uganda's savannah parks. It is an ideal addition to a Uganda safari for travellers seeking birdwatching, forest exploration, cultural encounters and off-the-beaten-path adventures.
