About Nkuringo gorillas

Country
Rwanda
Region
Nkuringo

The Nkuringo Gorilla Sector is one of the most scenic and adventurous gorilla trekking destinations in southwestern Uganda, located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Situated along the forested slopes of the Albertine Rift, Nkuringo is renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, lush tropical vegetation, mist-covered hills, and unforgettable encounters with endangered mountain gorillas.

The sector is home to several habituated mountain gorilla families that visitors can track with the guidance of experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense rainforest, navigating steep slopes, and following forest trails in search of these magnificent primates. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are permitted to spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat, watching their feeding, grooming, playing, and family interactions.

Beyond gorilla trekking, Nkuringo offers excellent opportunities for nature walks, birdwatching, hiking along the scenic Nteko Ridge, and cultural encounters with local communities. Visitors can learn about traditional Bakiga culture, rural lifestyles, and local customs through guided community walks. The area also provides spectacular views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding valleys, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers. Nkuringo is particularly suitable for adventurous travelers who enjoy challenging hikes and rewarding wildlife experiences. Because the terrain is steep and can be muddy, good physical fitness, sturdy hiking boots, drinking water, and appropriate rain gear are recommended.
