A Spice tour will take you to discover spices, fruits, vegetables, coconut tree climbing and test fruits indigenous to Zanzibar. Spices are a big part of everyday life in Zanzibar since it is used in food, traditional medicines, spiritual, cultural and cosmetic use, tourist attraction and a major export. Visit spice farms on this day. Tour for fruits like papayas, mangoes, pineapples and bananas sold on the streets by vendors and in the markets. Taste and enjoy ‘king of fruits’ called the Durian which is usually green and brown with a formidable thorn-covered husk but inside has creamy color, sometimes dark-yellow. It is eaten at different stages of ripeness, each with a unique taste. Watch some locals skillfully climb the coconuts , let them drop some down to you and cut open for you to drink the coconut water and eat the inner pulp. Learn to climb the coconut tree if you feel adventurous and aren’t afraid of heights.
Today you will tour on Changuu Island that the locals sometimes call it Quarantine Island or Kibandiko. In the 1860’s the island was used as a coral mine and a prison for rebellious slaves however in 1893 it was turned into a quarantine station for yellow fever cases which was functional half a year then the rest of the year it was used for tourist holiday accommodation as a government owned tourist resort. Visit the prison and you can also tour the prison cells. This island is home to a collection of endangered Aldabra giant tortoises originally a gift from the British governor of Seychelles. Now, more tortoises are brought to the island from other locations for conservation. You can observe and feed the tortoises while at the Island. You can now snorkel in the water around the island.
Wake up early for the first activity of swimming with the dolphins at Kizimkazi village. In this area the most common species i.e. bottle-nose dolphins come out to fish in the morning at sunrise and after they return to the deep waters which then make it hard to see them. Experience the dolphins’ true ocean grace and hear them communicate with each other.
Swimming with dolphins costs only USD$15-25 which pays for boat and conservation fee plus mask and flipper rental.
As you leave Kizimkazi, go on a guided nature walk in Jozani walk. Jozani Chwaka National Park was set up as a conservation area for the rare Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey. Watch these lively animals feed, groom one another, copulate in their natural habitat. They are fine with people being around that some will pose for your photos. Other animals you will find in the forest include chameleons, snakes, bush pigs, elephant shrews, suni antelopes, Sykes, Aders’ duikers, blue monkeys and different bird species like Zanzibar somber greenbul, white-browed coucal, Fischer’s turaco and crowned hornbill.
