Overview

About this journey

This exciting 2-day Jinja adventure safari offers travelers an unforgettable experience in Jinja, one of Uganda’s most vibrant tourism destinations and the country’s adventure capital. Located approximately 85 kilometers east of Kampala along the shores of Lake Victoria, Jinja is famous for being home to the legendary source of the River Nile and for offering some of East Africa’s most thrilling outdoor activities.

Highlights

What you'll experience

  • A short guided walk to the twin cascades of Sezibwa, where African paradise flycatchers dart through the riverine forest and local guides explain the site's cultural significance to the Buganda kingdom.

  • Uganda's largest surviving lowland rainforest closes around you on a foot trail where red-tailed monkeys shake the canopy overhead and over 300 bird species — including the grey parrot — call from the understorey.

  • A slow boat from Jinja's waterfront carries you to the exact point where Lake Victoria releases the White Nile northward. Marabou storks line the papyrus banks; cormorants dry their wings on half-submerged rocks.

  • Stand above the broad, churning shelf of Bujagali as the light goes amber. Local fishermen balance on rocks that have been their fishing grounds for generations, casting lines into the white water below.

  • The Nile's rapids between Bujagali and Itanda are among the most consistent Grade V white-water runs in Africa. Your certified guide reads each line before the raft tips into the chaos — the swim, when it comes, is warm.

  • A short paddle from the source monument brings you to Samuka Island, where African fish eagles perch in the canopy and pied kingfishers hover above the shallows in the golden afternoon light.

Why choose us

Why choose a Small Group Journey?

Why Visit Jinja? Jinja offers a perfect combination of adventure, nature, culture, and relaxation. From thrilling white-water rafting to exploring the Source of the Nile and tropical forests, this destination provides unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking excitement and scenic beauty in Uganda.

A Local Guide Who Knows the River

Every departure uses a certified Jinja-based naturalist guide who has grown up on the Nile. They know which rock the African fish eagle uses at Samuka Island and which section of Mabira holds the grey parrots in the morning.

Small Groups, Better Moments

We cap departures at eight guests. On the water, that means fewer rafts and more time reading the river. On the boat to the source, it means the guide can stop and wait for the kingfisher to land.

Safety Without Theatre

Our rafting partner holds international swift-water rescue certification and keeps safety kayakers in every rapid. The briefing is thorough, the equipment is current, and the swim rescue is practiced — not just discussed.

Itinerary

your day-by-day journey

Day 1Kampala – Sezibwa Falls – Mabira Forest – Jinja

Breakfast wraps up early at your Kampala hotel before your guide collects you for the 85-kilometre drive east along the Kampala–Jinja highway. The road is rarely boring: sugar plantations give way to tea estates, and the skyline flattens into the broad basin of the Lake Victoria catchment.

About halfway, you pull off at Sezibwa Falls for a guided walk down to the twin cascades. The air is cooler here, smelling of wet rock, and your guide — a local naturalist — points out the strangler figs and tells the story of how Sezibwa was considered a deity by Buganda royalty. Keep your binoculars out: African paradise flycatchers are almost guaranteed in the riverine gallery.

Back on the road, a shorter stop at the edge of Mabira Forest lets you stretch your legs on a marked trail beneath a closed canopy. Red-tailed and grey-cheeked mangabey monkeys move through the upper storey. By mid-afternoon you reach Jinja, check in, and take a late-afternoon boat out to the Source of the Nile — the exact spot where Lake Victoria surrenders to the river's northward pull. Dinner and overnight at your lodge above the river.

A guided forest walk offers opportunities to spot: Monkeys, Colorful bird species, Butterflies, Indigenous tree species, Beautiful tropical vegetation

After exploring the forest, continue toward Jinja while enjoying views of tea and sugar plantations that characterize eastern Uganda. Upon arrival in Jinja, visit the famous Source of the River Nile where the world's longest river begins its remarkable journey northward toward the Mediterranean Sea. You may also enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the Nile and explore nearby islands while observing birdlife and the surrounding scenery. Later, transfer to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.
